Motorcycle Lessons

To ride a motorcycle in the UK you need to complete Compulsory Basic Training (CBT), pass the motorcycle theory test and pass the 'off-road' and 'on-road' riding tests. You have two years to complete the on-road and off-road riding tests before you'll have to take the CBT test again. Going from a novice rider to a full unrestricted license holder can be a challenge, but we hope the information in this guide will make it easy for you to navigate the process. On this page, we've compiled a list of training companies providing motorcycle lessons and CBT training centres for riders right at the start of their journey.

Young Rider Focus

There are many who believe the young PTW rider sector is often overlooked, underfunded and under-represented within the road safety community.

Young Rider Focus was conceived following a survey among road safety professionals which confirmed an appetite for a conference focusing on the key issues faced by 16-25 year-old motorcyclists, the highest risk road user group in the UK.

The event will bring together public and private sector road safety professionals from across the UK, who are committed to helping reduce casualties among young riders.

Young Rider Focus will seek to shine a light on the key issues – and to spark debate, interest and importantly, positive action.

The Young Rider Focus conference will focus on the training of young people operating powered two-wheeler vehicles. 19 -25 year old drivers and riders are statistically the group most at risk of being involved in a serious road traffic incident. At the same time, young riders just need to complete CBT training before legally being able to ride in the UK. Many road safety campaigners feel more training is required if we’re to reduce the number of accidents involving young riders.

It’s clear that young riders need additional training to complement their standard motorcycle lessons and we’re hopeful that other safety initiatives will follow off the back of the Young Rider Focus.

Motorcycle Lessons – Safe Riding Tips

As thrilling and enjoyable as the open road can be, staying safe while riding should be at the forefront of every rider’s mind. During your motorcycle training, your instructor will teach you the fundamentals of safe riding. You’ll learn how to maintain a defensive riding position, how to overtake safely and how to anticipate the actions and intentions of other road users.

Thames Valley Police have a put together a video on safe riding and it’s well worth watching as part of your motorbike training.

Motorcycle Lessons – Road Positioning

Learning how to position yourself when riding is a key part of staying safe. It’s a fundamental part of learning to ride and your motorcycle instructor will spend a good chunk of time going over this particular concept.

If you’re looking for additional advice on how to position your bike when riding, we recommend checking out the Roadcraft Nottingham – Motorcycle Training video. In the session, Russ goes over the essential rules of safe positioning and spends a good bit of time discussing the three basic road positions a rider should take up, i.e the left tyre track, the middle of the road and the right tyre track. He explains the benefits of positioning your bike in the middle of the road when going around a left-hand bend, even though many motorcycle instructors teach you to position yourself left of the centre line in this situation. He also goes on to discuss how to ‘slice danger’ when you’re faced with a vehicle waiting to emerge from a nearby junction and an oncoming vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

All in all, this is one of the best motorcycle lessons on road positioning, and it’s recommended viewing for anyone serious about staying safe while riding.
