You’re Carrying a Child Under Three Years Old In Your Car. Which Restraint is Suitable For a Child of This Age?

As the driver, you must ensure children under three are secured with a child seat before starting your journey. Other suitable restraints include baby and booster seats. Any restraint should be suitable for their height and weight. If you’re involved in an accident with an unsecured child, it could lead to significant injuries.

Children in Car Seats

Who is responsible for ensuring the child is secured correctly?

The vehicle’s driver is responsible for ensuring a child under three is sat in a child seat. It’s the driver’s responsibility, not the parents, passengers or child. If you’re driving a car with a small child, you must ensure the child is secured with the appropriate restraint.

Do not secure a child under three in any of the following ways;

  • With an adult seatbelt
  • With an adult lap belt
  • Adult holding the child
  • The child sat in the middle seat between two other passengers

You can find a full breakdown of the requirements for seat belts and child restraints in rules 99 – 102 of the highway code.
